“New Orleans’ response to the 2010 Census will be a critical road map for future funding of essential services such as infrastructure, education, recreation, and medical assistance. Especially during this recovery period, it is vital that all New Orleanians complete and return their forms in March of 2010.” -Nolan V. Rollins, President/CEO

This is a time in our history like never before, when we must all unite to inspire change in our communities. Participating in the 2010 Census and encouraging others to do the same is one simple way you can make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Census data will affect the quality of life in our community in many ways. Consider the following:

  • Census participation gives political voice and hope for change to the community because census data will determine how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Census data guide local decision-makers on where to build new roads, hospitals, child-care and senior centers, schools and more.
  • Businesses of all sizes use census data to make strategic and informed decisions that will spur growth and create jobs in communities like ours across the country.

One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Participation in the 2010 Census is easy, important and safe. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with anyone, including the IRS, FBI, CIA or any other government agency. All Census Bureau employees take the oath of nondisclosure and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data.

In support of the 2010 Census, we will share information about the census on our Web site, in newsletters, at events and in a variety of other ways. We encourage you to immediately complete and mail back your 2010 Census form, which will be mailed or delivered to households in March 2010. Please let others in our community know this effort is underway. Be a voice for our community, help shape a bright future for the next generation, and encourage friends and family to complete and mail back their forms, as well.

The Urban League recognizes the incredible opportunity and responsibility facing the metropolitan New Orleans area. With Census Day in less than a year — April 1, 2010 — the Census Bureau has already launched a critical national effort that affects the apportionment of congressional seats, and how the federal government annually allocates $300 billion in federal assistance to state, local and tribal governments.
